It's an UN treaty that allows free transit through territorial waters, Iran is not a signatory to the treaty so they have the right to put up a toll booth. USA blockade is an illegal act of war.

I'm not sure why people are still surprised by US negotiating tactics, because they are the same every time, ask for a ceasefire, pretend to be open to negotiations, then demand surrender. They think that when the enemy stops fighting, even for a few days, it becomes harder for them to start again. Meanwhile the US rearms, moves weapons and troops around and prepares the next volley. In this case it seems to be the Chinese who were being naive in forcing this ceasefire on the Iranians. Alexander is wrong about Maritime Law - in times of war a belligerent is allowed to suspend what is known as innocent passage.

The Law of the Sea does not control such waters between belligerents during hostilities. That Law covers "innocent passage" in peacetime, not hostilities. Furthermore, in the Gulf, none of them can claim to be neutral, because they are all going to/from belligerents. For example, in both World Wars the US and Britain completely blockaded all neutral trade to/from Germany, including oil and food. The only ships to reach even the Occupied French ports were "blockade runners."
